Background: wiki

general/thematic content warnings and opt-out for marc/moon knight located here.

Marc is a difficult individual: he’s abrasive, blunt, and single-minded. Empathy has never been something that comes naturally to him — Marc, whilst not meaning to, tends to get incredibly and wholly wrapped up in his own issues and matters of self that he doesn’t always (read: rarely ever) stops to consider the impact of his actions on anyone else. This isn’t a one-and-done, occasionally occurring trait, it’s a consistent pattern of behaviour and he often needs to be reminded by others that what he does has consequences or he needs to be pulled back from making horrific mistakes. This is something that he's aware of, even if he's not very good at recognising it in the moment — he describes himself as "[the man who] makes the wrong choice every time".

In spite of this, he’s incredibly protective in both a general and a specific sense. He’s completely dedicated to his mission as the Fist of Khonshu — that is, as both a bringer of vengeance and “[the] Protector of Travellers at Night”. In line with the fact that he tends towards obsessiveness and the fact that he has a violent nature, he — especially when his mental health is poor — has a tendency to go too far. Indeed, his unpredictable nature is something that he wholly recognises and utilises to his own benefit1. His reputation as "not very stable, probably" with a side of "there's a chance he'll carve your face off" is something that he battles with: he enjoys it for the way that it benefits him as Moon Knight, but equally, he hates himself.

1 like, my dude, there's a whole spectrum between peter "won't kill a single person" parker and frank "kill ALL THE PEOPLE" castle.

Which is to say: unsurprisingly, Marc's mental state is fragile. Canonically, he's diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder2 which is due to trauma experienced in his childhood, and his acceptance of what this means for him tends to ebb and flow. Occasionally, he blames his DID for all of his problems in life (of which there are many, because Marc is a mess), whilst at other times he accepts his DID as part of him and utilises it to his advantage as a gigantic weirdo who fights crime in a three-piece suit.

2 Marc's DID is canonically stated as presenting atypically — comics!! — on account of his brain's structure being irrevocably changed after being touched by a god. That is, Marc battles with mental illness and has head his messed with.

Marc's personality is deeply rooted in self-loathing for essentially everything: Marc has an unhealthy tendency to separate and partition his life: Mr. Knight is the superhero who protects his local community, who is capable of working alongside the police and who does not commit horrific acts of violence. He wears a suit. Then there's Moon Knight, the less sanitised and people-friendly superhero ("superhero"), who does commit questionable actions. And then there's Marc Spector, the guy who fucks up every single aspect of Marc/Moon Knight's lives by being an awful person at all times.

Marc's self-loathing and self-hatred is consistently funnelled into 'Marc Spector' rather than any other identity he wears — Moon Knight and Mr. Knight, for all else, do help people and are capable of good things. Marc doesn't ascribe any of his positive actions to Marc Spector — indeed, as of his canon point, he's just gotten over a spate of wilfully and deliberately suppressing the personalities of Steven Grant and Jake Lockley for two reasons: one, his desire to be "normal", and two — more to the point — his belief that Steven and Jake are better people than Marc is and that the people he cares for will leave him for Steven and Jake if he allows anyone to meet them.

This self-loathing goes hand-in-hand with all the guilt Marc carries around — his family life was difficult and he frequently butted heads with his father over their perceptions of weakness and strength, and where violence stood as a reflection of the two. As a boy and a young man, he considered his father weak because he wouldn't use violence to fight back against anti-semitism and didn't understand why Elias viewed perseverance as a trait to be proud of for the Jewish people. Post-death and revival (the first time) and post-becoming the Fist of Khonshu, Marc has grown to understand his father's POV and considers himself weak and selfish for choosing a life of violence (consistently — as a boxer, in the US marines, the CIA, a mercenary and a vigilante) and for throwing away his faith and heritage in favour of not dying.

Abilities:
fighting — Marc was a boxer, then military, then CIA, then a mercenary and assassin. He is skilled and effective in close-quarters combat, however his personal fighting style leans heavily towards 'gets the job done'.
languages — Marc speaks English (native), Arabic and Symkarian, along with a smattering of French.
weapons — as per his military training and later work as a mercenary, Marc is skilled with a variety of weapons and an excellent marksman. His weapons of choice as Moon Knight are crescent darts — crescent-moon shaped discs, which he uses as projectiles and ... has previously used to ... carve into faces. But also, he'll use just about anything he can as a weapon.

His powers, his abilities, everything to do with Khonshu: canon is deliberately vague at times as to whether how much of it is real and how much of it is in Marc's head. However, Marc believes them to be real and true or otherwise, this belief does seem to have some basis in reality (or it affects reality). Current canon seems to lean towards Marc's power being, essentially, immortality due to Khonshu's repeated efforts to bring Marc back from death (three times, so far!), so this is the reading I'm going to go with in game.

Outside of this — and the biggie — is that Marc's nature as Khonshu's avatar (moreso than his DID) lends himself to being somewhat impervious to psychic and telepathic attacks and mind reading. His mindscape is shown to be hellish, fractured, and utterly terrifying for humans and non-humans alike, and he's not afraid to use this to his advantage.

Also, whilst I know it's not exactly an ability, but Marc can and has used his alters to his advantage as each has different strengths to Marc himself. Steven Grant is a charismatic millionaire, adept at obtaining information from and mixing with the rich, upper echelons of society. Jake Lockley is a rough-around-the-edges New York cabbie, highly protective and affably charming, essentially the antithesis of Steven.

Inventory:
Outside of his clothing, Marc will have five crescent darts (projectile weapons), his truncheon/grappling hook, and his phone.

Samples: one (network), two (log), three (...longer log sample).

MARC SPECTOR

marc has taken to more-or-less living in the mr. knight suit (mackay run) and mask on account of his intense self-loathing and desire not to, like, look at his own face. despite seeing a very nice and reasonable therapist after the whole age of khonshu bullshit (thanks, aaron), marc is presently fully committed to forcibly suppressing his DID and the alters of steven grant and jake lockley because why deal with your problems when you can just avoid them.

marc's appearance runs the gamut from put together — that is, clean-shaven, with a healthy pallor, no dark circles, little bruising — to utterly dishevelled. when he's struggling with his mental health and throwing himself (only) into vigilantism, his appearance tends to thoroughly reflect this — dark circles underneath his eyes, facial hair — whether it's stubble or a thoroughly unkempt beard, untidy, unconditioned hair, bruising — facial, bodily, everywhere. marc's approach to fighting is essentially: why dodge?

or in the words of taskmaster: "of all the fighting styles, I've ever tried to copy, [yours] is easily the worst. have you ever seen a punch you wouldn't prefer to take with your face?"

what I'm saying is, it's not just the talking to an invisible egyptian god that has people thinking marc's crazy, you know?

he's difficult to get along with, abrasive and blunt with a very dry sense of humour. surprisingly eloquent and very fond of dramatics, marc can be charming when he wants to be, he just ... often isn't. also: slightly warped perception of reality.

he can occasionally1 be an utter shitheel of person, otherwise he's a not-great person who's trying to be a good person.

1 specifically, he has a past as an utter shitheel of a person, currently has the propensity for being an utter shitheel of a person, but is trying Real Hard not to be an utter shitheel of a person.

STEVEN GRANT

steven appeared when marc was a child, first as an imaginary friend then as an alter. he's a charismatic, millionaire playboy. a director and an investor. he dislikes violence more than either marc or jake, and is used to a Certain Lifestyle. he's the funds of the whole moon knight operation, used for obtaining information accessible only by high society.

he takes more pride in his appearance than marc and jake, is often clean shaven and is horrified when marc fails to take care of the body.

JAKE LOCKLEY

the grumpy uncle.
fake moustache that may or may not be obviously fake1.

ostensibly the most charming and down to earth of the three, albeit in a distinctly more rough and ready kind of way. jake, in contrast with marc and steven, speaks with a new york accent and is noticeably working-class — jake makes a living as a cabbie and has a fondness for diners and dive bars.

is frequently seen wearing flat caps and garish combinations of colours.

1 depends on the writer, but current writer (mackay) has gone on record as stating that he likes to think that most of jake's associates know it's fake moustache and just, like, don't say anything. which is fucking hilarious.

opt out

topics — heavy violence, murder, death, religion and anti-semitism (whilst his jewish identity is important to him and his background, marc has been quite conflicted about it at several points throughout his life, and he's been the recipient of anti-semitism, particularly as child), mental illness + dissociative identity disorder are all topics that have the potential to come up in threads with marc, so if there is anything specific that you would like to opt out of, or if you would prefer to opt out of interacting with marc altogether, please leave a comment below! i totally understand it's a difficult canon.

in terms of other optional opt-outs, marc's alters take the form of millionaire steven grant, new york cabbie jake lockley, mr. knight as a 'concerned citizen' vs. the very violent moon knight himself. if there is a specific alter you would prefer not to interact with, or a specific alter you would prefer to only interact with, again, feel free to specify!

marc may interact with these other alters and/or the egyptian god khonshu, and this can take the form of him appearing to talk to himself. again, i aim to be mindful of other player's comfort levels, so will check-in with you in advance unless an opt-in/out is explicitly expressed in advance!

screening is enabled.

backtagging yes!
threadhopping case-by-case basis
fourthwalling not my favourite thing unless it's a necessary part of characterisation (ie. deadpool)
offensive subjects i don't have any triggering subjects that i'd prefer to avoid, however i would prefer that anything that is potentially offensive or triggering for others (eg. sexual assault, suicide, mental health etc) be given appropriate content warnings and be dealt with as respectfully as possible, however i am fully aware that in-character views/actions are obviously not a reflection of ooc views! also — moon knight, ya feel?
timezone / tagging speed gmt + medium — i vary between being v slow and able to get to tags a couple of times a day, but i try to hit my inbox back at least once a day.

IC

physical contact physical affection will depend on who and the circumstances, general physical contact is a go for it but the reaction will depend on the circumstances because, y'know, marc isn't a totally unreasonable human being.
mind reading canonically, this does not turn out well for a lot of characters that try it. marc's mind is an absolute fucking mess due to the egyptian moon god thing and he's well aware of it — anyone that tries to weaponise mind reading against him will be invited to do so and to ... not enjoy the results.
romance marc likes to think of himself as a loner and pushes a lot of people away and tends to be quite difficult to get along with, which means romance in and of itself requires a lot of work. depending on canon point/mental state, it's going to range from a hard no through to a yeah, maybe.
shipping yes — marlene, frenchie, tigra, gena (jake); maybe — frank, natasha; no — reese, bushman, badr, jeff
fighting fuck yeah
injuries or death injuries — absolutely yes. marc is not a graceful fighter and he tends to end a lot fights very bruised, bloody and in need of varying degrees of medical attention. death — also yes, but with plotting and communication.
canon point preference for ellis/shalvey run or mackay/cappuccio run — in terms of characterisation, i take strong influence from moench, huston, ellis, lemire and mackay, with an intense dislike for bemis and bendis.

OPT-OUT

moon knight comes with a boat load of content warnings, primarily related to mental health + illness (in particular DID, however the very fictional moon god aspect of canon is said to be the reason for marc's DID presenting atypically), violence, death and religion, so i have a screened opt-out post located here.
